Session Overview:

Schools are highly valued in Australian society and have a broader role than formally educating children. A school's role is to also promote children's health, safety and wellbeing, and impart social and life skills, cultural values and, in the case of many non-government schools, religious values. This session highlights the importance of ensuring good governance in protecting children and draws on the findings and recommendations from the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse as well as recent issues facing schools around social media and bullying.

The webinar will focus on the steps school boards should take to deliver on community expectations for keeping children safe at school with an emphasis on practical good school governance elements that contribute to a healthy and safe school culture.

You will learn:

  • To identify if your school is at risk of failure to protect children.
  • Key governance lessons from the Royal Commission.
  • How to consider your school's culture and whether this promotes a safe environment for children.
  • Linkages with good governance principles, risk management and strategy.

The webinar is designed specifically for school board directors and those who report to school boards and provides tools and frameworks which apply to contemporary governance issues. It is designed to stimulate thinking and generate ideas and questions that school boards should ask.
