Session Overview:

Last year, Speech Pathology Australia launched “Speech Pathology in Schools: A resource to support engagement and participation of students with speech, language and communication needs in schools”. Within this important resource, a response to intervention (RTI) framework was advocated. Nested within this framework is the need for collaborative quality instruction, the need to monitor and evaluate children’s progress as well as to respond to this data and provide or support whole/small group and 1:1 intervention. This approach begs the questions of critically evaluating the purposes and timing of our diagnostic language assessments and the tools we use for these assessments. In this PD event, we will also consider an RTI framework within Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) settings for 4 year old children/pre-schoolers.

What will I learn?

  • What is a Response to Intervention (RTI) model and why do we need to consider this?
  • What are intervention approaches and techniques for children who require support for vocabulary and oral narrative?
  • What can we use to monitor children’s response to intervention, when targeting vocabulary and oral narrative?

Who should attend?

  • Registrants must be speech pathologists.
  • This workshop is relevant for speech pathologists working with children 4-7 years who are at risk or have developmental language disorder. 
  • The workshop will cater to speech pathologists with a range of experience across SLP service delivery contexts.
  • Speech pathology students who have undertaken the relevant lectures and/or coursework in paediatric language and/or clinical placements are welcome to attend.
